Tuproq qattiq qismini mineral moddalar tashkil qiladi. Tabiiy joylanishda qattiq zarralar tuproq massasining maʼlum qismini egallaydi, qolgan qismini esa zarralar va ularning agregatlari oraligʻidagi har xil kattalik hamda shaklga ega boʻlgan kovaklar (gʻovaklik) tashkil qiladi. Bu boʻshliqlarning umumiy yigʻindisi tuproq gʻovakligi deyiladi. Tuproq gʻovakligi kapillyar va nokapillyar boʻladi. Kapillyar gʻovakli tuproqning mayda zarralari kapillyar oraligʻidagi hajmga, nokapillyar gʻovaklik esa makrostruktura elementlari oraligʻidagi yirik kovaklar hajmiga teng.
