Abstract

This paper discussed the problem research institutes are facing in Nigeria. Qualitative and quantitative data were used in the paper. The data were collected for online publication and print materials. The paper concluded that inadequate funding, shortages of staff, poor capacity building programme, insecurity, lack of sophisticated research facilities, inadequate transportation facilities, a poor synergy between research institutes and industries, poor leadership, corruption, poor funding of research findings and poor motivation of staff are some of the challenges facing research institutes in Nigeria. To address this, the paper hereby recommended that the federal and state government should increase the funding of the various research institutions in the country for the effective administration of the institutes across the country. The government should direct employment into some of the research institutes that are faced with the problem of shortages of staff. Adequate funds should be provided to all the research institutes for an effective capacity-building programme for their staffers.
