NSAID-induced lesions of the gastrointestinal tract have become widespreadin recentdecades. Their spectrum includes esophageal lesions, dyspepsia syndrome, gastropathy, and enteropathy. Diagnosisof enteropathy is difficult and became possible after the introduction of capsule endoscopy. PPIs are used to treat gastropathy, but they are ineffective for treating enteropathy. Cytoprotective prostaglandins play a key role in the development of NSAID lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. Synthetic analogues of prostaglandins such as misoprostol have a cytoprotective effect, but they cause a significant number of adverse events.
